Little shoes for little feet.

I was just taking a short break from working and noticed her shoes, those little shoes. For little feet.

It’s been a bit over three years since she blasted into our lives and changed us in so many ways.

I thought I knew everything about being a parent to one child, my now-teen boy.
I thought I knew it all about raising a kid while building a business.

I knew nothing.

It’s been a bit over three years since everything changed.

Since my son had a sister.
Since my business had a surprise shake-up (SURPRISE… I’m NOT superwoman lol).
Since we found a new dynamic.

Having children is for sure the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, and the hardest.

I love them to bits, they are my world and they are the reason I do what I do.

And when I caught a glance of those shoes today… I missed her.

I missed her sweet giggles.
I missed her plea to run around and play.
I missed her cuddles.

I know all too well how fast those things disappear forever. My son is now almost 15 and if I’m lucky I’ll get a hug, we’ll have a chat and maybe watch a show together. I’ve got to cherish all the moments.

So… I knew when I saw those shoes I had to write to you. Even though I’ve written already today.

That little moment… the freeze-frame in time.

She’s getting older now. She needs me less. I’m able to focus on my business more. Soon she’ll be off to school and I’ll focus on my business even more. I won’t wish it away!

I’ll cherish those moments!

I’ll giggle with her…
I’ll play when she asks…
I’ll cuddle at every opportunity…

That’s why I’ve REMOVED distractions from my life and business and I’ll KEEP removing them when they sneak back in.

I was horrified about how often I check Facebook on my phone, for no good reason, and to no good end. I don’t need to know what everyone’s doing all the time.. it’s addictive! What I need is time for my itty-girl, to be there when the teen-boy comes home and has stuff to share and of course to go on much-deserved date nights with hubby (we are DUE)!

What I need is productivity, focus, planning.

And I’m getting that. I’m getting IT and I have such a great plan for moving forward that I can not WAIT to see take shape.

And those shoes.

They’ll be gone soon.

They might be replaced by teen-sized heels, or soccer cleats (she loves sports) or bigger runners.

What I know for sure they’ll be gone soon and that tugs my heart.

No more distractions.
No more wasted time.

Just share what you love and you’ll get paid…

Affiliate marketing is often an afterthought, something to do “later”.

What most people don’t realize, until they do, is that you can incorporate affiliate marketing, naturally, into what you are ALREADY doing and get paid while you build your business, build your list, create your brand and more.

Just share what you love!
Just tell people what’s working for you.
Just tell people what you’re having trouble with.
And get paid for telling your story…

It really does work like that. And it works BEST like that, in my experience.

When I first got started on my blog in 2008 I thought I’d be an “affiliate marketer”.

Of course it sounded AWESOME to just get paid for sending people to buy other people’s stuff. So I threw out a bunch of blog posts about products and told people they should buy them.

But… nothing happened.
no sales
no interaction
no interest

So I threw out more blog posts, added images linked with my affiliate links, sent a bunch of emails saying things like “hey look at this program it looks so cool”… etc.

NADA

But it makes sense.

I mean I REALLY want to go see the new Logan movie, but I haven’t yet. Would you run out to see it if I said to you… “Hey that Logan movie looks pretty awesome doesn’t it? You should go see it?”. You might because you love Xmen, or you might be thinking you’ll just save all that popcorn and movie ticket money until you hear from someone who ACTUALLY saw it and loved it.

That’s why it works so well to just SHARE what you love as you go!

Now the key here is to have a very open mentality about yourself and your business. Sharing means being vulnerable and allowing people to get to know YOU. That takes a little practice but it’s soooo freeing when you start getting responses from people WHO thank you for being so real. You’ll love it!

So here’s your step by step:

  1. Find an use products YOU LOVE. Ones that relate to your business and your life. If it serves YOU and you are your target market, then it’s fair game.
  2. Look for affiliate programs for the ones you love. You can go to Google and type in “Logan Affiliate Program” (replacing Logan with whatever it is you love)… I find many programs like that if I can’t just find a link on the bottom of the site. If you can’t find anything you could contact the company or just move along.
  3. Apply to the affiliate program and wait for your special tracking affiliate link. Then make a special shortlink so you don’t use that ugly, long affiliate link anywhere.
  4. Share, share, share! Share in blog posts, like a story of what’s happening with you, what you’re using, what works and what makes sense. Share everything, not just the things you’re an affiliate for but of course DO include affiliate links to the ones you ARE an affiliate for. Note: You do need to disclose you are an affiliate when you share your link, legally.

The beauty of this is it’s not out of the way work… build your business and just naturally incorporate the mentions into the things you are doing!

If you’re a business coach, you’ll already be telling people about business building, tools, resources, etc.

If you’re a fitness coach, you’ll be mentioning fitness equipment, apps, software and more.

If you’re a virtual assistant, you’ll be telling clients they need website hosting, email software, project management tools and more.

You see how easy it is to just FIT this right into your business?

Why I Switched from OptimizePress to Thrive Themes

Anytime I make a big change in my business I get quite a few questions.

Of course, most people want to know why? Why am I making the big change?

About a year and a half ago I switched my WordPress theme from iThemes to OptimizePress and wrote all about why I made that decision in this post.

I’ve switched themes many, many times over the years. It just goes to show you that even with all my experience in WordPress and themes you can’t know what you need until you need it and that’s why you shouldn’t spend forever picking a theme. Just pick what you need for now and expect your business to evolve over time.

Why I Switched Away from OptmizePress

The main reason is it isn’t working right.

I have friends using it who couldn’t get the editor to work. I have a VA friend who said many of her clients couldn’t get it to work, either. I had to use two browser to get all the functions to work when did “work” and then suddenly it just stopped working.

I could have contacted support, yes, but I just had this gut feeling that the company is not putting in the kind of upkeep I want on a theme and I decided it’s time to find a new solution.

Why I Switched to Thrive Themes:

I picked Thrive Themes for a few main reasons:

  1. I wanted a theme like OptimizePress that could do salespages and opt-in pages with ease.
  2. Thrive Themes is focused on conversions.
  3. I was pretty confident I could recreate what I already had in Thrive Themes.

Simply put: I was pretty happy with OptimizePress and what it could do, it just wasn’t letting me update! So I needed to update the topic of the month for my Laptop Lifestyle Business Club and it wasn’t happening. I decided to make a quick switch to the new theme.

Now I’ve got the new training on the salespage and I’m really happy with the look of it as you see here:

It was pretty easy to duplicate the look of my blog on the new theme. This is almost exactly the same as with OptimizePress:

 

 

Also, I totally redid Laptop Lifestyle Business Club as a website now instead of a salespage. This will give me a lot more opportunity to really share what the club is all about and invite people to join my email list before they are ready to make a commitment to join the club.

There are so many features to Thrive Themes! I’m really JUST getting into it.

Here are the different plugins that come with the theme:

As you can see, Thrive Themes is created all around the concept of engaging people, gathering leads and making sales! That’s RARE in a WordPress theme and it’s definitely what got me super interested in the theme in the first place.

I purchase the full package with a yearly payment. I feel it is SO worth it to pay for a theme because it helps ensure that I AM getting a theme that is updated and that I can use long-term. It’s not a guarantee as I also paid for OptimizePress and it’s updates, but it’s a heck of a lot more secure than grabbing a free theme that the designer has not nearly as motivating a factor to keep it updated and maintained to work with all new versions of WordPress.

My focus right now is on building my list and making my salespages convert the best they can. It just makes so much sense to get the MOST out of my marketing as I can and I know this theme was an excellent choice to do just that.

Have I Ever Told You “my story”?

I’ve been doing quite a few interviews over the past couple of weeks.

First of all, I LOVE it! Someone tell me why I haven’t been doing this my entire online marketing career, will you? Seriously the interviews were like me chatting with friends and there’s nothing more enjoyable than a good chat with a friend.

Here are some of the people who’ve interviewed me recently:

In almost every interview I’ve gotten some form of the question: “So how did you get started?”

It really got me thinking back to my early days in business.

This year marks ten years since I quit my job to work full-time from home as my sole source of income. At the time that I quit I was a single mom, living in my parent’s basement apartment, working an afternoon shift at a factory.

I didn’t know a lot about business.  I had a terrible track record with jumping around trying to figure things out and not really getting ANY traction (unless you count building debt… I was getting good at that.. eeks).

One thing I knew was that I was beyond DETERMINED to have true freedom for my life.

I had decided when my son was four months old, in 2002, that I wanted to start my own business so that I could be home with my son instead of having to go back to work after a year and leave him for about 10 hours a day, every day, Monday to Friday. That just did not work for me! I was dreading it, even though I had about eight months left on Canadian maternity leave.

So I started my first business when my son was just four months old. I partnered with my dad and we started a business we called Rainkissed. We made handmade soaps, bath balms, lip balms and other bath and body products.

This is the business where I learned my first stages of e-commerce, shopping carts, list building and so many other marketing methods I STILL use today.  It was where I learned how to build a website that makes sales (and it was so THRILLING when sales started coming in from all around Canada and the United States!).

I had actually learned to build my first website in HTML back in 1999, for fun! A college friend passed me this sheet of HTML code and told me to go to Yahoo Geocities, get a free account and pop that code in. Voila! I had a very, very basic website that I then learned how to code, one little bit at a time, into a pretty cool website. I had a hobby site for the beaded jewelry creations I used to make at the time and I’ll never forget throwing a bunch of beads on a scanner bed and making the first website background image I ever used and coded all by myself.

Yes… I have a long history of being on the internet! I have ALWAYS been fascinated by the internet and the ability to connect with people anywhere in the world. It drives my business still to this day and serves me very well because I always remember my customers are people, not statistics.

So, back to how I got from there to here:

After starting the soapmaking business I kept at that for a few years. I struggled to get it into any kind of profitable situation with that business and eventually started trying new things. Then, I decided I couldn’t live with the lack of income my businesses were bringing in, my parents also had many “sit-downs” to tell me the same (and the debt I’d rung up was not going away) so I decided to go get a job.

By this time my son was around 3 years old.

I ended up at an automotive factory for an afternoon shift job even though I had a degree in Chemical Engineering Technology – Environmental. I took the job because it was close to home and at least cut off the daily three-hour commute to jobs in my field.

In 2006 I started a Virtual Assistant business. It was the FIRST business I had started where I saw an immediate profit. I was so thrilled to quit nine months later and walk off that factory lot for good.

That wasn’t it, though. I walked away from one thing I hated, right into a bit of a nightmare I’d created for myself.

Instead of one boss, I now had about 15!
I had NO business boundaries as I was just so excited to have a business.
I had not worked in any kind of lifestyle freedom and was working my butt off, day and night.
I had created a situation that was completely OPPOSITE to what I had wanted.

I had achieved my big dream: quitting my job to work from home BUT I didn’t know that wasn’t the whole thing until I was neck deep in it.

So I had to make changes. I had to work at creating the true lifestyle business freedom I wanted.

And I did!

Over the years I got smarter with taking on the right clients. I filtered and qualified until I worked with people I completely loved.

Over the years I raised my rates so I was earning more and more and getting leverage.

Over the years I started creating products so I could create more leverage by not always working dollars for hours.

And all that progress, all that working towards goals I didn’t even know I had at first, got me here.

To the point where I have complete and total lifestyle freedom.

I work when, where and how I want.
I work on only projects of my choosing.
I take time off whenever I want it.
I spend my time on things that bring me JOY and serve my people.

It’s the true Laptop Lifestyle and I don’t just do this to “get rich quick”…. hahahahaha! Did you just read my story? Right? Would it even be WORTH all that for a few quick bucks? I think if money was my only motivator I would have given up long, long, long ago!

No.

My passion runs deep.
My need to help rings true.
My story is my mission.

I got to where I am because I went through what I did.

I run my own membership group because I want to provide the same support that got me through all those times where I had no fricking clue what I was doing! But also through the times when I DID know what I was doing and just needed to tweak things to make them better. I’m here to help those who are getting started and who are on their way, and just really know they deserve that complete freedom that you can totally have with this kind of business!

THAT is my passion. It’s my mission. It’s my goal every time I do an interview, write an email or create a piece of content.

This morning I didn’t wake up and check Facebook like I do almost every other morning.

I didn’t because I deleted the app off the home page of my phone and decided I am ONLY going to check social media and email on scheduled times.

What I especially LOVE is his down to earth sharing of stories and examples of real situations. It makes the content easy to read, remember AND take action on because it doesn’t feel overwhelming, at all.

But… I printed off about 25 pages of Issue One last night, got to reading and immediately came up with this brainwave of an idea.

Before I share the idea, let me tell you what made me think of it:

So, yeah, Facebook… and emails. They distract me.
Honestly, they can totally DERAIL me.
They can create anger (political posts, anyone?).
They can create confusion (umm… what WAS I working on again?).
They can cause me to lose HOURS of precious time I do not have to waste.

Oh… you too?

So when I read that I should set aside time for distractions I immediately decided to do it.

I deleted my Facebook App from my phone.
I moved my Email App from its main position and placed “Google Keep” for to-do lists instead.
I made a commitment to myself to ONLY check Facebook and Email at scheduled times (which will be about 2-3 times per day for me and my business).

Then as I kept reading I got to a part where Jimmy wrote: “Try it for 30 days and see what happens.”

And I thought… “I will!”.
And then I thought… “and my peeps should, too!”

So the 30-Day Distraction Challenge was born.

Build a Business Around Your Life…Not a Life Around Your Business

Picture the lifestyle you want.

No, not the one you think is SAFE to want, not that one. The one you REALLY want.

The life where you never have anything on your schedule you don’t want there.
The life where you’re never too busy to go on field trips at school with your kids.
The life where you choose every person you work with, based on the joy it will bring you.
The life where you take a day off when you want.
The life where you be, do and have whatever YOU want.

Man oh man wouldn’t that be nice?

Maybe you’re working a job right now you hate (been there) or you’re running a service business that’s running you ragged (done that) or maybe you’re even a successful information product selling but you’re just so overwhelmed with work you never even get time to THINK about what you want (felt that, too)…

Create whatever you want.  If you don’t create what you want, the world will create it for you and then  you’re very likely to end up with things you don’t want.

I’ve just made a pretty tough decision that I know is going to upset a few people, but I had to do it because it is what’s right for me and it’s how I’m going to make the biggest and best impact with my life and business.

I’ve decided to step back from my Protege Program and the one on one coaching I was doing there.

Starting now it will no longer be an option to hire me as your business coach through that program. I’m shutting it down (for now, possibly permanent) to focus on where the biggest part of my heart is… in my membership, the Laptop Lifestyle Business Club

I know this is just the right move for me.

What to do When You Get BORED With Your Business

Every once in a while I think I really like to “test myself” and see if I’m in this business for the right reasons and for the long-term.

I’ve been doing what I do online now for close to ten years and like a normal person would, sometimes I get bored doing the same things.

So… I mix it up. I’ve had a ton of different niche blogs over the years. I started AngelaWills.com; my fitness and food blog. Before that, it was StarVA.com which I sold to Tanya Bryant (and am so happy I did because she’s doing awesome things with it). Before those I’ve had a hula hooping blog, a refashion blog and many, many more.

This time I got a spark of an idea that *almost* got away from me.

I was just about to go ALL IN on getting my Real Estate License.

Yep.

Why?

Well,02 I’ll tell you.

There were a lot of reasons. I actually listed out a TON of pros but I can’t find the list. I’m going to try to remember them all here in a minute but the biggest PRO I could think of is my marketing experience. It was the attraction to me. I see new technologies like Facebook LIVE becoming available and I often think of how that could be applied to real estate and I just wanna try it! So I figured why not try it AND earn the kind of commissions a Real Estate Agent does.

Now don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t intending on leaving Laptop Lifestyle Business Club. I was thinking I could run both. That was where I think I was very wrong after talking to a close friend in Real Estate.

Let me see… here are some of the many Pro’s from my Pros vs Cons list:

  • New Challenge and I LOVE Challenges.
  • Learning a new thing.
  • Opportunity for self-development.
  • Get out of the house a lot more often to meet with clients.
  • Will help my self-confidence.
  • Less time at home meals less time close to the kitchen (hopefully help weight management).
  • Meet new people/friends.
  • Use my marketing experience.
  • Will require me to have a nice wardrobe and maintain hairstyles, etc. (ie. SELF CARE)

There were more. Here are a couple of the Cons:

  • A lot of evening and weekend work.
  • A lot of expenses.

The only real difference in the cons list (which was short) was the evenings and weekends out of the house. Otherwise, I already have expenses.

When I did talk to my Realtor friend I came to the realization that it wasn’t for me because she said this one thing: “You are at the whim of your clients.”

Uh oh. That sounded like exactly what I DIDN’T want.

So I sat down to rethink… why did I EVEN want to do it in the first place.

It was new. It was shiny. It sounded exciting.

It wasn’t the same ol, same ol.

But then I realized that I could take that very long Pro’s list and I could apply it to my current business, change it up, change things up, bring back excitement. I also realized (and really I already knew) how much I LOVE and APPRECIATE <3 <3 <3 my lifestyle, my laptop lifestyle. I mean I really sometimes don’t understand how very lucky I am.

I know so many people get up daily to go to jobs they do not like (or even hate) to support their families.

My job, I do love it. I love hearing from clients and customers who get results. My heart melts to hear someone has taken action because of some little thing they heard me say. I feel like I’m doing good in the world when someone’s business grows a little because of the help I gave them, and now the help they can give someone else.

So to get back to the title of this blog post:

What to do when you get BORED in Your Business…

  • Explore that boredom. Find out WHY you feel this way.
  • Explore your options. Think you need a job? Go for an interview and see if it’s REALLY what you want or you just forgot how good you have it.
  • List out the things you can change. My pro list is not a list of things I can do to improve my life! I don’t need to be a Realtor to do those, I just need to take some action.
  • Ask your customers and clients. Ask them for feedback on your services, your business and you. Maybe they’ll give you ideas for improvement and most likely they’ll give you some positive feedback to tell you that you’re doing the right thing.

I think also when you get bored or stressed about business sometimes you need to just STEP BACK. Often I get over-hyped about business going my way and hyper-focused on business so much so that I forget to take care of myself. Or maybe I need to get out and meet people or reconnect with friends like I blogged about the other day. It might not really be my business that’s the issue at all then, just the time I’m focusing on it that’s taking away from other aspects of life.

Of course maybe you are bored because you need a change. That’s quite possible. For me it wasn’t what I needed. I just needed to explore an option and then drop it like a hotcake. I’m so happy to do what I do, to see the awesome members at my LLBC membership growing and being motivated and taking action regularly and to have completely and total freedom of lifestyle. The only people who’s “whim” I react to are my own (and ok, my family too ;).

Laptop Lifestyle: Find Your Tribe

Today I’m sharing a video I created almost a year ago now… in 2016. It was nine years for me in business full-time without a job. This year marks my tenth year! Time sure does fly.

When I think back to how I got here I can 100%, without a doubt tell you that it would NOT have happened without a mastermind group. Today many people call it a tribe.

Whatever you want to call it you need to find your “people”. People who will support you, encourage you, tell you that you’re not crazy (when everyone else says you are) and show you that this lifestyle IS possible.

When I got started I found my tribe. A group founded by my original mentors Alice Seba and Kelly McCausey. In that group I met so many ladies who I still know today, who’ve I’ve worked with, worked for, hired and more.

I’m afraid to even try to name them all because I’m sure I’d miss some amazing ladies. These are ladies I promote for affiliate commissions, who promote me for the same, who I’ve partnered with, referred clients to and hired. Lots of opportunities to build business, grow and of course learn, too.

Big Lessons from Ten Years of Working for ME

May 25th marks ten full years since I quit my job to work from home. I’m so proud of that. Very proud. No one could (credibly) accuse me of being a “flash in the pan”, “fly by nighter” or whatever other silly term there is for someone who’s not going to be around long.

I will never forget my boss telling me not to burn my bridges as I told him I’d be working for myself on the internet. I’m sure he thought it was a crazy plan and he was looking out for me, but he couldn’t have been more wrong. I’ve never been back down those bridges and I sure as hell don’t ever intend to!

In those nine years I’ve learned a lot about business, life, myself.

In those nine years I bought my first home, got engaged, broke my ankle (bad), had my second child and finally decided to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

I couldn’t possibly put all I’ve learned into one blog post so I’m picking the nine top things I’ve learned to share with you today:

  1. Your Life is a Direct Result of Your Thoughts – I know this is DEEP for the first one but it’s by far the biggest lesson! You can’t get anything out of life that you don’t first THINK you can have. It’s not just thinking it, it’s believing it deep down to the core. One of my biggest challenges at first was getting past the $3,000 per month income range. In my job I was making about $2500 per month and so I wanted a little more to be able to quit. Then I got STUCK thinking that was all I could make and believe you me I was keeping myself at that range until I started believing that $5k per month was not at all impossible for me!
  2. You Need a Network of People – Friends, Colleagues, Other People who can hire you, refer you, tell people you’re awesome, promote your stuff, be accountability partners with you and more. You can’t sit behind your computer all along and get very far for very long. This is not a lone ranger type of deal even if it looks that way.
  3. The BEST Way to Learn is by Doing – I see people all the time learning, learning, learning and waiting for that secret key to unlock all the mysteries of internet marketing. It’s not the way to go. By all means learn and keep learning (I still do) but then DO. Do stuff. Try stuff. Make stuff up. It’s OK you can always try again if you mess up.
  4. If Your Life is a Mess, So Your Business Will BE – I mean metaphorical mess AND literal mess. It’s harder to work when I can’t find my desk. It’s harder to have energy to work when my kitchen is too messy to cook a good meal. It’s harder to work when I’m fighting with hubby or I haven’t had any sleep. Take care of your life. Do not neglect it to work on your business because you’ll actually be destroying two important things at once if you do that.
  5. You Can Build a Business In Much LESS Time Than You Think -Before my daughter was born I used to work from Monday to Friday from 9am – 4pm when my son got home from school and often evenings and weekends, too. I had a LOT of time available to work. Then I had my daughter and had about 80% LESS time to work. I was completely SHOCKED that my income barely dipped even the first six months after I had her.
  6. Your Business Growth and Personal Growth are Connected – Personal issues like anxiety, stress, low confidence, social shyness and more affect you both personally and professionally. You have to take time to work on YOU and take time to do self-development. YOU are the driving force behind your business and the stronger you are, the stronger your business becomes.
  7. There is no “Good Time” for Anything – This goes for life too but all too often people are waiting for the time when they have the money, when their house has sold, when they don’t have a family member’s estate to deal with, when all the ducks are in a row. Life happens and it doesn’t stop happening so you MUST be willing to roll with it and work with it and do what you can. I don’t know how many people have said to me that they don’t know how I even get any work done with a little one. Well, I have to. I have to work to help keep our household running and I can’t blame life. Sorry to be harsh but forget about that notion that you’ll have this serene and empty time to build your business and go for it no matter how hectic life seems!
  8. Loneliness and Depression Can Hit You Hard – This is serious. There is an issue for many people who work from home and a cycle that can be bad for us, very bad. You can be so focused on the computer and obsessed with building your business that you don’t take care of you. You don’t sleep enough, shower often enough, eat well enough, get enough sunshine and it can REALLY start to take a mental toll. This can lead to a spirally situation of loneliness and depression. I’m not in any position to give medical advice but I know I’ve either been depressed or been very close. You’ve got to pull yourself out of that shit. Get up and go for a walk. Drink water! Sleep. Take care of you and GET OUT around people. That’s so very important. I get a weekly fix of “socializing” by going to the local coffee shop for an hour or two and I love that. Or I go work at the library. Don’t isolate yourself. ENJOY your business!
  9. The Opportunities Are Endless – There was a time when I was super frustrated with the idea of working from home. Back before I quit my job for good I was trying business after business and was so confused about why none of them “worked”. It took me a long time to realize that any one of those businesses could have worked, it’s just that I gave up on them too soon. There is no end to the ways you can make money. It’s simply a matter of finding a market and providing them something they want. It’s not complicated or even hard. The hard part is making ourselves believe it’s NOT hard and then actually doing the WORK (yes, shocker, work involved) to make it happen.
  10. You Can Level Out Your Income – Ok I know I said nine things I learned but I couldn’t leave this one off and I didn’t want to take any others off either. Another thing I struggled through was the constant “hussle” for income. Either through constantly looking for new website design clients or constantly trying to fill my group coaching programs. That was super frustrating and extremely stressful. I’m not saying I NEVER stress now but I certainly do a lot less of it now that I have and am working on more passive income. That’s income from my membership site, from affiliate marketing that keeps earning me money and from creating lead to sales funnels that do the selling for me. I’m actually really excited about where I can take this in the years to come.

Working at home is an amazing way to live. I enjoy and appreciate my true lifestyle freedom on a daily basis. I wish this for ANYONE who wishes it for themselves and I love to support entrepreneurs working on it. That’s why I’ve created my Laptop Lifestyle Business Club. Beating Work at Home Loneliness

When I tell people that I work from home the first reaction is almost always something along the lines of how great it would be and that they wish they worked from home. I mean it sounds amazing, and really it is, with the total freedom, the completely flexible hours, the working from the couch (or the bed even), the making money while you sleep.

I quit my job back in May of 2007 and so I’ve had a lot of years to experience both the good, the bad and even the ugly of working from home. The good FAR outweighs any downsides in my opinion and that’s why I’m coming up on my tenth year of working completely from home to earn my living and support my family.

One of the big downsides, though, is isolation and loneliness. That’s real and it’s a slippery slope because work at home isolation and loneliness can lead to depression if you’re not careful.

So let’s tackle this challenge!

I’ve learned a lot from my years at home and I’ve experienced the isolation and loneliness myself. Even though I see family every day we need more interaction in our lives than just the few people in our immediate family.

Here are my best “Beating Work at Home Isolation & Loneliness” tips:

  1. Lunch With Friends – Do you have other work at home friends? Maybe a mom friend on maternity? A friend who works shifts or weird hours? Do lunch! Meeting with my work at home and stay at home mom friends has been a great way to pick me up every single time. It’s so nice to get out with a friend and share a meal, chat about common interests and just have a laugh!

  2. Coffee. Get Coffee. – When I feel like I need to get out and I can’t arrange time with a friend I like to go and just have a coffee at the local coffee shop. Sometimes I’ll work, sometimes I’ll sit and people watch (not stare of course or be creepy in any way 😉 ). It gets me out around people and that’s often enough to make me not feel isolated at all.

  3. Events – There are always events to go to. You can go to events related to a hobby or personal interest, or go to ones related to your business. Of course it’s fun when you can combine the two! I’m going to start looking into going to much more events now that I’ve figured out I’m totally able to get to downtown Toronto on the train. A quick and easy 45 minutes or so and I don’t have to brave the busy city in my car opens up a whole lot more opportunity to attend events.

  4. Join Groups – One of the best things I EVER did for my business was join a membership group for moms who wanted to work at home. I did that back in 2006-ish and I still have so many friends from that group that I can email and connect with on facebook anytime I want to talk with someone who understands what it is I do for a living. That’s entirely why I created my own membership at the Laptop Lifestyle Business Club.   5. Get Your Blood Tested – Weird one, right? You might think you’re lonely and unmotivated because you’re working at home but you could also be suffering from a deficiency in something. A common deficiency for many people these days is Vitamin D, which would only be made worse in our industry because we spend less time outdoors. Our office is just a few feet away and we don’t even get a little sun on our way to work. I found out from my own blood tests that I am both Vitamin D AND Iron deficient. Add to that less sleep because of a ill-sleeping toddler and it’s no wonder I’m not overly energetic!
  6. Workout & Eat Right – Another one that SEEMS out of place but it’s so NOT. Working at home can lead to major inactivity if you let it and that can lead to weight gain, poor meal choices and very low energy. I chose to make a change back in September when I became a Beachbody Coach and signed up to do the 21 Day FIX. I lost 21 lbs within the first couple of months and I started my own blog. I’m serious about making this a life change and it’s been hard. I know it will be worth the effort in the end and I KNOW this will help me beat feeling isolated and lonely. The thing is when you’re energy is low you don’t want to leave the house, and when you don’t leave the house you’re sure to feel more isolated and alone. Keeping on top of health and fitness will give you the ability to think better and have more energy.   7. Rent Shared Office Space – Did you know that some places have shared office space for rent? You’re not renting a whole space on your own, rather renting a room for a few hours, days or weeks out of the month. I looked into this in my local area and I can rent space for 2 hours for just $60/month or 10 hours for $190 per month. It’s a great way to get that office atmosphere and connect with others without committing to renting one on your own.
  8. Work at the Library – I love working at the library. There’s something quite awesome about being surrounded by books, filled with information. All I have to do is glance in either direction to get all kinds of inspiration and content ideas! Also, working at the library gets you around others which takes you out of isolation.
  9. Take a Class – You could take something related to your business, or not. Either way you’ll get around people of similar interests and you might make a new friend! I’m seriously considering taking hula hoop classes myself, or hula hoop class instruction. I’ve always found it fascination and fun what people can do with a weighted hula hoop.
  10. Take Care of YOU – This fits with suggestion six on working out and eating right but it encompasses so much more. You’ve heard the work at home people talking about spending all day in their pajamas. What about when all day turns into a week? Is that ok? What if you barely shower? What if you’re too busy working that you don’t clean the kitchen and as a result you don’t cook healthy meals. You see how this can quickly spiral out of control leaving you with no desire to leave the house or socialize. That’s a problem! Take care of YOU. Do that workout, shower, get the laundry done, cook healthy meals, clean the house and take time to do things that make you feel renewed, energetic and ready to go see the world (or at least something more than your own four walls)!

I know I’ve given you a LOT of tips. You don’t have to do them all. I don’t do them all. I have done most at some point or another. For now I’m actually going to use this post for myself as a sort of to-do list to get out and social MUCH more than I’ve been. I hope it helps you do the same!
